Long Time Coming iPhone Update

Category: Mobile Devices,Nerd

So I have had my iPhone for almost a year now. I have never been more disappointed in a phone. While it is a great device, it does just about everything but be a phone. I miss at least 3 calls a day and I drop easily twice that.  This is horribly unacceptable.  I mean how can I conduct business if I cannot stay on the phone long enough to have a five minute conversation?

While the phone has been through a lot (many drops, falls skiing, being buried in the snow, left in the sun for hours) it cannot just be a phone.  At one point I had a solid 4 pixel thick band of dead pixels all the way across the screen.  I went to the closest Apple store to where I was (45minutes away in Bethesda, MD) and they were very nice and replaced the device with no headache (I almost fell over when I was told they would replace it because I have terrible luck with phone support).  The new phone was a bit faster and more stable however the dropped calls still persist as do the missed calls.  I’m not sure if this is AT&T’s fault or the iPhone’s, but either way it’s terrible.  As my first post on the subject was a while ago, great improvements have been made with syncing calendar/contacts to the iPhone.  Google has enabled Microsoft Exchange support for Contacts, EMail and Calendars.  This has made things much easier for me.  I hate Outlook with a passion and couldn’t stand having to use it and Thunderbird to sync everything down to the phone.  I just wish Apple would enable native Google Voice support.  I don’t care if it doesn’t do VoIP.  I would just like to be able to dial a number from my Google Voice number without having to go online to do it.  I work on a very expansive engineering project right now and my company does not provide me with a cell phone.  I do not mind using mine, as the calls are fairly limited however I do not wish to give out my personal cell phone number.  It would be nice to be able to show a caller ID of my Google Voice number without the lag of the VoIP associated with it.

As I said before, the iPhone does a great many things very well.  The apps are awesome and there isn’t much you can’t do with the phone.  However it is a very poor phone.  I cannot stand the missed calls.  There are times when I swipe to answer, the phone stops ringing and switches to the call screen.  I put it to my ear, only to say “Hello?” and there be no response.  I look down at the phone and the call was never answered.  This is very annoying.  Another big issue I have been having is the “Call Failed” screen.  I feel like they should just show me a sad iPhone picture all the time because I don’t think my phone is ever happy.  I do plan on switching to another network when the contract on my second line is up in January.  Any suggestions for a network/phone?
